Does Texting while Driving Increase Risk of Car Accidents?
Does texting while driving increase the risk of car accidents? The answer is a resounding YES. A recent study confirmed that texting, dialing, or even reaching for your cellphone significantly increased the risk of getting into a car accident-especially for younger drivers. When drivers are on their cellphones, risky driving increases and drivers are less likely to recognize road signs, pedestrians, and even small children on the road.
Researchers at the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute used video cameras, GPS devices, lane trackers, sensors, and other speed gadgets to monitor drivers as they engaged in cellphone use. The risk of being involved in a crash or near miss increased seven-fold when young drivers were reaching for their cellphone or dialing. It increased four-fold when sending and receiving a text message.
While talking on the phone didn’t seem to increase the risk of crashes, the results may be misleading because drivers are less likely to take their eyes off the road but more likely to misinterpret what they see. Thus, talking drivers may inadvertently run a red light or turn left into oncoming traffic.
To date at least 12 states have banned the use of hand-held cellphones while driving and 41 states have banned text messaging while driving. Colorado drivers who are under the age of 18 are prohibited from using cellphones of any kind while driving (this includes hands-free devices). Colorado also prohibits all drivers from texting while driving.
