Denver Sexual Abuse Attorneys
Sexual Violence Is a Prevalent Problem
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), sexual violence affects millions of women and men and, in the United States. 1 in 5 women have experienced sexual assault or attempted assault. Most of these victims experience their first sexual assault before the age of 25.
The CDC also states that the number of sexual assault survivors is larger than any set of statistics may reveal, given that it is one of the most underreported crimes.

Silent Survivors
According to a study conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, a survivor’s relationship with the offender often impacts the likelihood of them reporting the crime, particularly if the offender is or was an intimate partner, friend, acquaintance, or a person in a position of authority.
The report also stated that some of the most common reasons why survivors did not report sexual assault were:
- Fear of reprisal
- Did not want family to know
- Did not want others to know
- Fear of the justice system
- Belief that the police would not do anything to help
The Probability Statistics Calculated by the Rape Abuse and Incest Network reported in 2013 that, due to the low reporting rates, only 9% of rapists get prosecuted and only 5% of cases lead to felony conviction.
An Abuse of Power and Trust
While public discourse has worked to dispel the myth that strangers are usually the perpetrators of this crime, most sexual assaults are committed by someone the victim knows, trusts, or even works for. Sex assault in the workplace is not commonly reported and, according to the U.S. Department of Justice, it is the lowest violent crime in that environment reported to police (24%).
In cases where the victim is a child, 60% of perpetrators are childcare providers, babysitters, or family members, according to the Office of Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering, and Tracking (SMART).
In a study conducted by the American Association of University Women, students between grades 8 and 11 were asked if they ever experienced inappropriate conduct at school. 1 in 10 students said they were victimized by a teacher or other school employee, which largely involved physical contact.
If this is indicative of what the nationwide number may be, approximately 4.5 million students in grades K-12 have suffered sexual assault at the hands of an educator.
