Grand County, CO -- A 60-year-old Colorado Springs woman died in a crash at the top of Berthoud Pass on Highway 40 on Sunday afternoon.
An eastbound pickup truck lost control on the icy highway and swerved into oncoming traffic around 11:00 AM. The truck collided with the woman’s vehicle—a westbound jeep—head-on. An additional seven people sustained injuries in the crash.
According to the Colorado State Patrol, at least three of the injured individuals were airlifted to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Denver and Colorado Children’s Hospital in Aurora. Two of the people airlifted were minors, and the other was a 39-year-old woman. The condition of the children is unknown, but CSP said the woman had “life-threatening injuries.”
CSP responded to the crash scene and pronounced the woman dead on site. Authorities report that each vehicle held four people but did not identify which cars the injured individuals were riding in when the crash occurred. An update on the conditions of the survivors has yet to be provided.
Both directions of Highway 40 were closed from Winter Park to Empire Sunday afternoon. Berthoud Pass reopened around 4:30 PM.
