Mother and Child Killed in Semi Crash in Weld County

Weld County, CO -- A mother and her child were killed in a crash involving a semi-truck Monday morning.

The collision happened on Weld County Road 74 around 10:00 am between a semi-truck and a 2006 Toyota sedan.

The site of the crash is about 10 miles northeast of Greeley just outside of the small community of Galeton, where the woman’s family lives.

The mom, 20-year-old Adrianna Lyzette Lopez Varela, and her child planned a visit to the aquarium that morning. The collision occurred on the way to the aquarium.

A neighbor stated that he saw the truck driver in tears after the accident. He also said that he heard the crash and ran to help. Shortly after, he saw the two lifeless bodies in the vehicle. According to a grieving family member, the baby just turned one.

According to the neighbor, the truck driver said the woman crossed into the center of the road, which made the collision unavoidable. The 64-year-old driver of the truck did not sustain any injuries. The incident remains under investigation.
