Weld County, CO --A chain of crashes in Weld County left two people dead this past Saturday. Colorado State Patrol believes that alcohol and drug impairment caused both incidents.
The first accident happened at 1:20 a.m. on County Road 49 near County Road 30. Trooper Gary Cutler states that a semitrailer was traveling north on County Road 49 when a Chevrolet Trailblazer driving south came across the road and ran into the semitrailer head-on. The 27-year-old driver of the pickup, whose name has not been released, died at the scene.
Only six minutes later, an unnamed 30-year-old woman crashed into the back of the disabled semitrailer while traveling north on County Road 49. She also died at the scene of the accident. The driver of the semitrailer, a 67-year-old man from Greeley, was not injured in either crash.
Troopers believe that the first crash occurred due to alcohol impairment. They are also investigating the possibility of both drug and alcohol impairment in the second accident.
Both accidents caused oil spills on the roadway. Hazmat crews worked overnight to clean up the spill and reopen the road.
