Toyota Airbag Recall a Safety Concern

Toyota Motor Company has recently had to recall nearly 1.5 million vehicles over safety issues-885,000 of those related to an airbag defect that prevented the airbag from deploying in a crash. The defect involved a short circuit that could cause the airbag warning lights to turn on and become disabled. In some situations, the airbags themselves could deploy inadvertently.

The defect was due to water leaking out from the air conditioning condenser unit and onto the airbag control module. This set about a chain of events that created a potential for a short circuit that could disable the power steering system, as well as disable the airbag system.

The recall itself covers 2012 and 2013 Camry sedans and hybrids, as well as the full-size Avalon sedan and hybrid and the Venza crossover. Those who are affected will receive a free repair of their system at no additional cost.

Toyota has been in the news the past several years with an unprecedented series of recalls. In fact, Toyota has had more vehicles recalled in the U.S. in the last 4 or 5 years than any other car manufacturer.

Airbag defects can occur on any make or model of car and the results can be devastating. If you or someone you love was seriously injured because an airbag failed to deploy, you may be able to seek compensation for your injuries. Faulty crash sensors, dangerous airbag designs, overly powerful inflators, and lack of internal tethers can all lead to airbag failure.
