Girl, 4, Killed in Suspected DUI Crash Caused by Babysitter

Denver, CO - Alaya “Lay Lay” Harbin, 4, was the victim of a suspected DUI in Denver’s Clayton neighborhood at Bruce Randolph Avenue and Columbine Street. The crash happened around 10 p.m. Saturday, July 20.

Police have identified the driver of the vehicle as Shaquea Smith, 28. Smith was babysitting 4 children, including Alaya, all of whom were unrestrained in the vehicle when the crash occurred.

According to police, Smith was drunk and had an open container inside the car. Fox31 Denver reported that court documents also revealed that Smith had a prior alcohol-related conviction. She has since been charged with vehicular homicide in connection with the incident.

Alaya was only a few weeks from her fifth birthday. Friends and family are planning to gather at the intersection in her honor, and a GoFundMe was set up to help with funeral expenses.
