Bad Weather Blamed for Colorado Accidents in February; Spring Won't be Any Better

Bad weather was to blame for a number of Colorado accidents in February, with the Denver Metro area experiencing all kinds of serious travel problems. Heavy snow was blamed for road closures, multiple traffic accidents, and cancelled flights at Denver International Airport.

State Trooper's reports of strings of multi-car pileups prompted the Colorado Department of Transportation to close all lanes of Interstate 70 overnight from Idaho Springs to C-470 in Jefferson County west of Denver. Some of the collisions involved as many as 70 vehicles, and in one accident, multiple vehicles had been hit when a truck jack-knifed. Every available tow truck was called to help move the vehicles from the road. Miraculously, no injuries were reported. A single-car accident later the next afternoon on eastbound I-70 did, however, claim one life.

On Vail Pass, two vehicles were struck when a diesel tanker lost control and rolled over. No serious injuries were reported, however, cleanup of the wreckage was time consuming as 55 gallons of fuel spilled and needed to be offloaded.

Downtown Denver did not fare any better as traffic flow came to a halt when heavy snowfall obstructed visibility, and problems ensued when a bus jack-knifed during rush hour at the intersection of 10th and Lincoln. Law enforcement closed the intersection of Lincoln and Virginia to investigate an accident in which a pedestrian was struck and seriously injured by a car.

Colorado DOT closed CO-119 temporarily in both directions in Boulder Canyon, and put several cities along the Front Range on accident alert, as the area braced itself for more wintry weather.

One day of warmer temperatures gave road-clearing crews a long enough break to restock deicers and perform necessary maintenance on snow-removal equipment. However, several consecutive days of snow afterward, kept 106 CDOT employees working with snow removal equipment in 12-hour shifts around the clock to confront the travel issues.

Spring Weather Brings New Challenges for Colorado Drivers

Unfortunately, spring brings new challenges for Colorado drivers. We are likely to get 1 or 2 more snowfalls before the weather turns for good. In addition, rain - combined with slightly freezing temperatures - can make driving a nightmare on Colorado roads. As the rain gets worse in April, slick roads can cause horrific accidents - especially for motorcyclists and truck drivers. Be sure to keep a watchful eye on the weather and if possible, avoid driving during bad spring storms.
